The Three Marriages: Reimagining Work, Self and Relationship, originally published in 2009, and asks us to think about our work, relationships and inner selves as mutually supportive as opposed to entities in conflict with each other. These pursuits are, at their hearts, non-negotiable, and to separate them in a bid to balance their demands, David Whyte argues, is self-defeating.

Over the course of the book he considers his own struggles and the lives of some of the world's greatest writers: Dante, Austen and Louis Stevenson among others. A fulfilled life, he demonstrates, is one in which our core commitments are connected and nourish each other.
